Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) in Ipoh, Malaysia, is dedicated to producing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also community-oriented. In line with this commitment, PUO recently organized a community service program called Program Bakti Siswa at Sekolah Kebangsaan Wira Jaya (SKWJ) in Ipoh. This program aimed to engage students and lecturers in meaningful activities that would benefit the local community while also providing valuable learning experiences for the participants.
The Program Bakti Siswa at SKWJ was conducted in two phases, each involving different groups of students and lecturers from PUO. In the first phase, 30 PUO National Service students, under the guidance of lecturer Mohd Nazrin from the Mechanical Engineering Department, painted classrooms at SKWJ in February. This hands-on activity not only helped improve the school’s facilities but also fostered teamwork and collaboration among the participants.
The second phase of the program involved 30 students and lecturers pursuing Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Manufacturing System Supply Network) under the guidance of Khairul Nizad Panior. During this phase, the participants designed, fabricated, and installed school landmarks at SKWJ between May and June 2024. This project allowed the students to apply their engineering knowledge in a real-world setting and make a tangible impact on the school and its students.
Apart from the practical skills gained through these activities, the Program Bakti Siswa also focused on developing soft skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving. These skills are essential for students to succeed in their future careers and contribute positively to society. By engaging in community service, PUO students also learn the importance of social responsibility and the value of giving back to the community.
In addition to the hands-on activities, a Signing Ceremony for the Collaboration Certificate between PUO and SKWJ was held to formalize the partnership between the two institutions. This ceremony, which coincided with the Inauguration of the SKWJ 2024 Landmark, was attended by Director Dr. Shamsuri Abdullah, representatives from PUO, SKWJ, and the local community. This collaboration not only strengthens the ties between PUO and SKWJ but also paves the way for future joint initiatives that benefit both institutions and the community at large.
Overall, the Program Bakti Siswa at SKWJ exemplifies PUO’s commitment to producing well-rounded graduates who are not only academically competent but also socially responsible. By engaging in community service and collaborative projects, PUO students gain valuable skills and experiences that will serve them well in their future endeavors. This program serves as a testament to PUO’s dedication to holistic education and its mission to nurture future leaders who are committed to making a positive impact on society.
