Choosing lower temperatures and shorter washing machine cycles can have a significant impact on the lifespan of clothes, according to new research conducted by home appliance manufacturer Electrolux Group. The study suggests that washing clothes in gentler conditions can extend the lifespan of items by more than 50 per cent, ultimately keeping them in circulation for longer.
Extending the life of clothing is crucial in reducing the environmental footprint of the fashion industry. Studies have shown that the average European disposes of kilos of garments each year, with the majority ending up in landfills or being incinerated. By choosing gentler washing methods, consumers can help reduce the carbon, water, and waste footprint of their clothes.
The research conducted by Electrolux Group involved testing the impact of different washing methods on various fabrics commonly found in clothing, such as jeans and t-shirts. By closely monitoring color degradation and enlisting the help of over 600 panellists to determine the point at which clothes would be disposed of, the study found that washing clothes at lower temperatures and for shorter cycles significantly increased their lifespan.
For example, a cotton t-shirt washed at 30C for 59 minutes was found to last more than 50 per cent longer than when washed on a regular 40C cycle, which can last up to 120 minutes. Similar results were observed for denim jeans, highlighting the benefits of choosing gentler washing conditions.
Elisa Stabon, head of product experience and product line care at Electrolux Group, emphasized the importance of keeping garments in use for longer to reduce their environmental impact. By wearing clothes more times between washes and opting for lower temperatures and shorter cycles, consumers can contribute to sustainability efforts in the fashion industry.
In response to the research findings, Electrolux Group has introduced a new methodology called the Electrolux Care Index, which measures the impact of different washing treatments on the durability of clothes. This tool aims to help consumers make more informed choices when it comes to caring for their clothing.
Sarah Schaefer, VP sustainability Europe and APMEA at Electrolux Group, encouraged consumers to adopt mindful laundry practices that can extend the life of their clothes. By lowering temperatures, shortening cycle durations, and reducing detergent usage, individuals can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of their clothing care routines.
Despite the benefits of choosing gentler washing conditions, the research highlighted a reluctance among consumers to make the switch to lower temperatures. Many households still wash their clothes at 40C or above, citing concerns about stain removal and habit as reasons for not opting for gentler washes.
Electrolux Group suggested several ways for households to extend the life of their clothing using their washing machines. These include choosing the right settings, using shorter cycles, and reading the care labels of garments to ensure they are washed at the appropriate temperature.
In conclusion, adopting mindful laundry practices such as choosing lower temperatures and shorter cycles can have a significant impact on the lifespan of clothes and reduce the environmental footprint of the fashion industry. By making small changes in their washing habits, consumers can contribute to sustainability efforts and help preserve the planet for future generations.
