Study suggests erythritol, a sweetener in stevia, may be linked to blood clots

CNN recently reported on a new pilot study that revealed a concerning link between the artificial sweetener erythritol and an increased risk of blood clotting. The study, conducted on 10 healthy individuals, found that consuming a drink containing erythritol more than doubled the participants‘ risk of blood clotting. This finding is significant as blood clots can have serious consequences, such as triggering heart attacks or strokes.

Lead study author Dr. Stanley Hazen, from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, highlighted the alarming results of the study. He noted that every participant showed an increase in platelet responsiveness, a key factor in clotting, after ingesting erythritol. In contrast, consuming a drink with an equal amount of glucose did not affect blood platelet activity in another group of 10 people.

The study’s findings have raised questions about the safety of erythritol and other sugar alcohols commonly used in low-carb and keto products. Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health, emphasized the need for further research to determine the potential risks associated with these sweeteners.

In response to the study, the Calorie Control Council, an industry association, defended the safety of erythritol, citing 30 years of scientific evidence supporting its use as a sugar substitute. However, the study’s researchers pointed out that the amount of erythritol used in the study was comparable to what is found in typical sugar-free products like sodas and ice creams.

Erythritol, like sorbitol and xylitol, is a sugar alcohol that is naturally present in fruits and vegetables. It is commonly used to sweeten products without adding extra calories or spiking blood sugar levels. Despite its zero-calorie status and lack of a lingering aftertaste, erythritol’s potential impact on blood clotting is a cause for concern.

The study, published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, involved 20 participants who were given either a drink containing erythritol or one with sugar. The results showed a significant increase in platelet activity after consuming erythritol, indicating a heightened risk of clot formation.

While the study was conducted on healthy individuals, the implications for those with existing heart disease or diabetes are particularly concerning. Dr. Hazen emphasized the importance of considering the long-term effects of consuming foods and drinks sweetened with sugar alcohols, especially for individuals at higher risk of cardiovascular issues.

In conclusion, the study sheds light on the potential risks associated with erythritol consumption and raises important questions about the safety of artificial sweeteners. As research in this area continues to evolve, it is essential for consumers to be aware of the potential health implications of their dietary choices.
