Devon County Council is taking a proactive approach to support individuals in their journey towards employment and training by expanding its network of Youth and Adult Employment Hubs across the county. These Hubs, in partnership with four district councils, aim to provide one-to-one skills and employment support to individuals aged 16 and over who are seeking assistance in entering the workforce and preparing for their future.
Currently, the County Council operates several Hubs at strategic locations such as Barnstaple Library, Cullompton Library, Exeter Library, and the Beehive Community Centre in Honiton. The success of these existing Hubs has prompted the decision to open two more locations at the Family Hub in Ilfracombe and the Old Heathcoat School Community Centre in Tiverton.
The Youth and Adult Employment Hubs serve as a central resource where individuals can access information, guidance, and support from various partners, County Council services, community projects, and employer and business support. These Hubs have a ‚one front door‘ approach, providing a fixed location for different stakeholders to interact with local communities and offer tailored assistance to those facing barriers to employment due to disability, health conditions, or other reasons.
Each Hub is staffed with advisers who provide a range of services including career guidance, CV and interview skills, training and qualifications, work experience and volunteering opportunities, apprenticeships, and supported employment. The team offers one-to-one guidance, acts as caseload officers when needed, and continues to support individuals until they achieve their goals.
Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Cabinet Member for Economic Recovery and Skills, expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion of the Employment Hubs network, highlighting the importance of these services in supporting harder-to-reach communities. The District Councils involved are also fully supportive of the Hubs in their respective areas, providing funding and local information to ensure seamless integration with available community support.
Leaders from North Devon Council, East Devon District Council, Exeter City Council, and Mid Devon Council have all praised the expansion of the Employment Hub network and emphasized the value of these services in providing opportunities for residents to develop new skills, access training, and explore employment options.
