In the quiet town of Mayfield Village, Ohio, a joyride turned into a chaotic scene when three teenagers took a car without permission and crashed it into a local grocery store. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, around 5:30 a.m., when Mayfield Village Police received a call about a car wreck in the Heinen’s parking lot.
Sergeant Kevin Miller of the Mayfield Village Police department provided details of the event, stating that „Three juveniles, one of them took their mom’s car without permission, and they went on a little joy ride and crashed into Heinen’s after losing control.“ The Heinen’s surveillance video captured the moment when the 16-year-olds lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on into the store’s brick wall.
Witnesses from a nearby apartment complex alerted authorities, reporting that they saw multiple teens involved in the crash, with one of them appearing to be injured. In the video footage, the driver is seen immediately going to the back seat to assist the passenger. Once they managed to get the injured teen out of the car, the group fled the scene and returned to their home in the Village of Mayfield.
Miller mentioned that the police were able to locate the teens by tracking the registered license plate of the vehicle. Days after the incident, the aftermath of the crash was still visible, with the concrete marked and damages covered by a piece of wood.
„The Heinen’s has some repairs to work, the bricks got smashed in pretty good,“ Miller stated. Despite the shocking event, residents in the area expressed their hope for peace to prevail. James Akers, a local resident, emphasized the importance of maintaining the peaceful atmosphere, stating that any disruption could lead to a reconsideration of long-term living plans.
Reflecting on the incident, Miller humorously remarked, „Well, the old saying goes nothing good happens after midnight and don’t take mom’s car without permission.“ He also mentioned that one of the boys sustained a leg injury but is expected to recover. The department intends to leave the charges up to juvenile court, considering the age of the individuals involved.
As the community processes the aftermath of the joyride gone wrong, the incident serves as a reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior. Mayfield Village residents and authorities alike hope for a return to normalcy and a continued commitment to safety in the neighborhood.
