The Loviisa nuclear power plant’s Unit 1 maintenance period is being extended due to a technical issue discovered during the start-up tests of the plant. Fortum, the company operating the plant, announced this on Saturday morning.
The maintenance period is being prolonged to investigate the cause of the problem and to fix the issue with one of the control rods. A week has been allocated for this, and the maintenance is now estimated to conclude on October 12th, according to the company’s statement.
Fortum had previously informed about a five-day extension to the maintenance period. Initially, the maintenance was scheduled to finish on September 30th. However, due to the technical glitch, additional time is needed to ensure the plant’s safety and efficiency.
While Unit 1 is undergoing maintenance, Loviisa’s Unit 2 remains operational. Fortum has assured that there is no danger to people, the environment, or the plant itself as a result of this incident. Safety measures are in place to prevent any potential risks during the maintenance process.
The extension of the maintenance period showcases the importance of thorough testing and maintenance in the nuclear power industry. Ensuring the proper functioning of all components is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of nuclear power plants.
Fortum’s transparency in communicating about the technical issue and the extended maintenance period is commendable. It demonstrates their commitment to safety and their responsibility towards the community and the environment.
As the investigation and repairs continue, Fortum will work diligently to address the issue and resume normal operations at Loviisa’s Unit 1. The company’s dedication to resolving the problem promptly and effectively is essential in maintaining the trust and confidence of the public in nuclear energy.
