As the new school year approaches, faculty, students, and staff members at Temple University are coming together to support students in the School District of Philadelphia through a collaborative effort to collect school supplies and uniforms. This initiative, led by the Black Student Union (BSU) in partnership with the College of Public Health, School of Social Work, College of Education and Human Development, and Community Gateway, aims to provide much-needed resources to students in need.
The idea for the school supply drive originated with the BSU in 2023, as they recognized the inequality that exists within the School District of Philadelphia. With marginalized students often lacking access to adequate resources for the school year, the BSU saw an opportunity to make a difference and address this need. By partnering with faculty advisor DaVonti’ Haynes and setting up donations through an online retailer, the BSU took the first steps towards supporting their community.
Zachary Mattis, president of the BSU, emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of the community and demonstrating a commitment to serving others. The first year of the initiative saw supplies being donated to students at Paul L. Dunbar School near Temple’s campus. This year, the program has expanded with the addition of the Community Gateway and the College of Education and Human Development, allowing for a greater impact and reach within the community.
Dean Monika Williams Shealey expressed excitement about joining forces with other university departments to support students in the School District of Philadelphia. By working together and pooling resources, the initiative aims to provide students with the tools and uniforms they need to start the school year strong. This collaborative effort not only alleviates financial burdens on families but also empowers students by boosting their confidence and readiness for the academic year.
The Office of Community Affairs and Engagement at Temple University is also playing a crucial role in supporting local students by providing school supplies to youth at Duckrey Elementary School and the Salvation Army. Through partnerships with organizations like the Fresh Grocer and state Senator Sharif Street’s office, the university is able to extend its reach and impact within the community.
Andrea Swan, Temple’s director of community and neighborhood affairs, highlighted the larger vision behind the school supply projects, emphasizing the importance of fostering unity and purpose within the community. By equipping young neighbors with the resources they need for the academic year, the university hopes to instill a sense of affinity for Temple at an early age and support students on their academic journey.
Donations for the school supply drive will be accepted through the end of August, with the goal of supporting students as they prepare to start the new school year. This collaborative effort between faculty, students, staff, and community partners exemplifies Temple University’s commitment to education, community support, and making a positive impact in North Philadelphia.
