The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Computer Vision Centre (CVC-UAB) have teamed up with three local libraries in the Vallés area to launch the innovative initiative „ISC2 – BiblioLab of Social Innovation and Citizen Science.“ This initiative aims to transform public libraries into collaborative and participative spaces that are open to society, adapting to the cultural and social changes brought about by the digital society.
The primary focus of this pilot programme is to engage high school students in research projects and introduce them to the concept of responsible research and innovation (RRI). By incorporating RRI concepts into library activities, the initiative seeks to foster transformative processes and promote a culture of ethical and socially responsible scientific practices. This initiative is just the beginning, as future plans include initiatives to promote scientific vocations and digital education among young people, turning libraries into hubs for learning, science, innovation, and technology.
The UAB has been actively involved in the Library Living Lab (L3) at the Volpelleres Library since 2014, a project coordinated by the CVC. Through the L3 initiative, various activities related to the ISC2 project have already been implemented, such as co-creation workshops, citizen science projects, and sessions on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). These experiences have laid the groundwork for the expansion of the ISC2 initiative to other libraries in the Vallés area, creating a network of innovative spaces that promote collaboration, learning, and community engagement.
By harnessing the potential of public libraries as hubs for social innovation and citizen science, the ISC2 – BiblioLab initiative is paving the way for a new era of library services that go beyond traditional book lending. By embracing digital technologies, promoting collaborative projects, and fostering a culture of responsible research and innovation, these libraries are evolving into dynamic spaces that cater to the diverse needs and interests of their communities.
In conclusion, the ISC2 – BiblioLab initiative represents a bold and forward-thinking approach to reimagining the role of public libraries in the digital age. By embracing innovation, collaboration, and community engagement, these libraries are not only adapting to the changing needs of society but also leading the way in promoting a culture of responsible research and innovation among the next generation of scientists and innovators.
