There are no ‚legitimate concerns‘ over immigration, despite what we keep hearing | Maya Goodfellow

Immigration has long been a contentious issue, with many blaming it for a variety of societal problems. From low wages to job insecurity, from anxiety about where we live to a perceived rapid pace of change, immigration is often scapegoated as the root cause. This narrative has been perpetuated by mainstream politicians and certain sections of the media, leading to a toxic atmosphere that has fueled far-right violence and racism.

Recent events, such as the arson attacks on hotels housing asylum seekers and the establishment of racial checkpoints, highlight the dangerous consequences of this anti-immigrant rhetoric. While most politicians denounce such actions as the work of extremists, they fail to acknowledge their own role in creating a political climate that breeds hatred and violence.

The idea that controlling immigration is the solution to assuage fears and prevent violence is deeply flawed. Immigration is not the cause of economic inequality or job insecurity. It is not the reason why some people feel anxious about change. These concerns are manufactured by politicians and the media, who paint immigrants as a cultural threat, particularly targeting Muslim communities.

It is crucial to challenge the notion of „legitimate concerns“ about immigration. Admitting that these concerns are illegitimate does not mean dismissing people’s fears, but rather engaging with them in a way that does not legitimize racism. Politics is about persuading people to see another way, not ignoring or accepting harmful beliefs.

To address the root causes of far-right violence, the government must take bold action. This includes incorporating the history of empire and migration into the curriculum, countering racism in the press, and providing better support for immigrants. Policies such as the hostile environment must be abolished, and safe routes of travel should be established to prevent dangerous crossings.

Furthermore, the government should invest in public services, tax the richest, and transition away from fossil fuels to create a fairer society for all. This not only improves people’s lives but also provides an alternative to the xenophobic rhetoric of the far right.

In conclusion, the recent violence is a complex issue with multiple factors at play. However, the anti-immigrant narrative must be challenged and dismantled if we are to move forward as a society. Politicians must take responsibility for their role in perpetuating harmful beliefs and work towards creating a more inclusive and just society for all.
