Three Lee County School Board positions available for election | Local news, sports, job listings

The upcoming School Board election in Lee County, Florida, is set to be a pivotal moment for the community as three seats are up for grabs. One of these seats is an at-large position that will be determined countywide, while the other two seats are specific to District 2 and District 3, with voters in those respective districts having the opportunity to cast their ballots.

In District 7, three candidates are vying for the seat – Vanessa Melbis Chaviano, Sheridan Chester, and Joshua D. Molandes. Each candidate brings a unique perspective and set of priorities to the table, aiming to address key issues facing the school district.

Joshua D. Molandes, a retired attorney with over a decade of experience in Southwest Florida, is focused on tackling the teacher shortage and improving student achievement. He emphasizes the need to raise teacher pay and enhance school safety measures, including expanding the Guardian Program. Molandes aims to advocate for teachers, students, staff, and parents, drawing on his legal background to make a positive impact on the district.

Vanessa Melbis Chaviano, a long-time resident of Lee County and marketing operations professional, is committed to a student-centered approach to education. She prioritizes academic programs, special education services, and mental health resources, advocating for smaller class sizes and personalized learning. Chaviano also emphasizes the importance of competitive salaries, benefits, and working conditions to attract and retain high-quality educators.

Sheridan Chester, a 23-year substitute teacher in the school district, brings a wealth of experience to the table. She highlights the pressing issue of teacher and substitute teacher shortages, emphasizing the need for realistic wages to attract and retain quality educators. Chester is dedicated to visiting each school and supporting students and staff in their success, underscoring her commitment to the community.

In District 3, candidates Bill Ribble and Kaitlyn Schoeffel are vying for the seat currently held by Board member Chris Patricca, who is not seeking re-election. Ribble, a resident of Estero with a background in corporate operational development, is focused on monitoring the district’s strategic plan and holding it accountable for key initiatives. He aims to address teacher and bus driver shortages by offering competitive wages and revisiting the district’s budget to ensure effective spending.

Kaitlyn Schoeffel, a car dealership spokesperson and mother, brings firsthand experience in education as a substitute teacher. She is committed to advocating for better pay, resources, and support for teachers and staff to create an optimal learning environment. Schoeffel prioritizes safety measures, mental health resources, and a positive school environment, aiming to foster a supportive and inclusive culture in the district.

Overall, the School Board races in Lee County are non-partisan, with candidates focusing on key issues such as teacher shortages, student achievement, school safety, and educational resources. The outcome of these elections will have a significant impact on the future of education in the community, making it crucial for voters to stay informed and engaged in the electoral process.
