Thrift Shop Green Goodbyes Expands to Tech Square

The opening of the new Green Goodbyes Thrift Shop at Tech Square marks a significant milestone for the program, which has been providing students with a sustainable way to repurpose household items since 2021. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Director of Community Engagement Julie Birchfield and Vice President for Student Engagement and Well-Being Luoluo Hong, signifies the expansion of the program to a year-round operation.

The Green Goodbyes thrift store, located on the second floor of Barnes & Noble at Georgia Tech, offers students the opportunity to shop for gently used items such as small appliances, pots and pans, dishware, and clothing, all free of charge. This initiative not only benefits students financially but also promotes campus sustainability by reducing waste and extending the useful life of household goods and clothing.

The store will open on Monday, August 12, during Week of Welcome, with operating hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the beginning of the semester. Starting August 26, the store will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Entry is on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of eight students allowed in the store at a time. Students are advised to be prepared to transport any items they select, including large items, and to bring their BuzzCard to verify their enrollment status.

Previously, donations were stored in containers and distributed during a one-day event at the beginning of each semester. By relocating to the new store, Campus Services aims to streamline the distribution process and serve more students throughout the semester. Donations of items will be accepted during normal business hours starting September 3, with the option to schedule drop-offs for large donations by contacting Julie Birchfield.

In addition to item donations, financial contributions to support the program are also welcomed. Green Goodbyes does not accept food donations, but non-perishable foods can be donated to Klemis Kitchen, Georgia Tech’s on-campus food bank. It is important to note the items that are accepted and not accepted for donation, including clean clothing in good condition, small appliances and household goods, and non-functioning appliances.

Overall, the Green Goodbyes Thrift Shop at Tech Square provides a valuable resource for Georgia Tech students, offering a sustainable and cost-effective way to acquire essential household items. By supporting this program, students can contribute to campus sustainability efforts while also benefiting from the opportunity to repurpose items that would have otherwise been discarded.
