Top Hydrating Foods and Beverages: Coconut Water and Celery

As the summer season brings soaring temperatures, staying hydrated becomes even more crucial to maintaining good health. Dehydration can lead to a host of issues, including fatigue, headaches, and even heat stroke. To combat this, it’s essential to consume foods and drinks that help replenish electrolytes, which are essential minerals that help regulate bodily functions. According to Cleveland Clinic, there are seven key elements that should be included in your diet to keep electrolytes at a normal level: Magnesium, Sodium, Calcium, Potassium, Phosphate, Chloride, and Bicarbonate.

While water is the best way to hydrate, it’s important to ensure that you are getting all the necessary minerals. Registered dietitian nutritionist, Nicole Antes, recommends adding trace mineral drops to your water or opting for mineralized water to enhance its benefits. Additionally, there are other beverages and foods that can help keep you hydrated during the summer months.

Coconut water is a natural source of potassium and can be a great option for hydration. However, it’s important to choose brands that do not contain added sugars or flavorings. Aloe vera juice is another mineral-rich beverage that is low in sugar and high in vitamin C. Dark leafy greens, such as lettuce, are also excellent choices as they have high water content and are nutrient-dense with B vitamins and fiber.

Celery and cucumber are both high in water content and rich in minerals like magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. Citrus fruits like lemons and limes are also great sources of natural electrolytes. These foods and beverages can help replenish your electrolytes and keep you hydrated throughout the summer.

In recent years, there has been a rise in popularity of drinks that are low in sugar and rich in natural electrolytes, often referred to as „Nature’s Gatorade.“ One of Antes‘ favorite mocktails for hydration includes coconut water, Celtic or pink Himalayan salt, and a squeeze of lemon or lime. This refreshing drink provides all the necessary electrolytes without added sugars or artificial ingredients.

Staying hydrated during the summer doesn’t have to be boring or complicated. By incorporating these hydrating foods and beverages into your diet, you can ensure that you are getting the necessary minerals to keep your body functioning properly. So, next time you reach for a drink, consider opting for coconut water or aloe vera juice, or snack on some celery or cucumber to stay hydrated and healthy during the hot summer months.
