Booking.com has teamed up with UN Tourism to introduce a series of online training programs aimed at hospitality businesses. These programs, available on the Tourism Online Academy (TOA), a joint initiative between UN Tourism and IE University, focus on key sustainability areas such as community engagement, energy and greenhouse gas emissions, food management, and water efficiency.
The four Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are designed to address critical aspects of sustainability in order to drive change in production and consumption patterns within the hospitality industry. While the courses are primarily targeted at hospitality businesses, they are also open to the general public, making them accessible to a wider audience.
One of the key areas covered in the courses is energy and climate action. By promoting efficient energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, hospitality businesses can not only contribute to the fight against climate change but also improve their operational efficiency and reduce costs. This focus on sustainability aligns with global efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change and create a more sustainable future.
Food management is another important aspect addressed in the courses. Adopting sustainable practices in food management can help minimize waste, support local economies, and promote healthier and more responsible consumption patterns. By implementing sustainable food practices, hospitality businesses can make a positive impact on the environment and contribute to a more sustainable food system.
Water efficiency is also a key focus of the online training programs. As water becomes an increasingly scarce resource in many parts of the world, it is essential for hospitality businesses to reduce wastage and improve efficiency in water management. By implementing water-saving practices, businesses can not only reduce their environmental impact but also lower their operational costs.
Community engagement is another crucial area covered in the courses. Engaging with local communities is essential for fostering sustainable tourism practices that empower local residents and provide authentic and enriching experiences for visitors. By involving local communities in tourism activities, businesses can create a more inclusive and sustainable tourism model that benefits both residents and tourists.
All the courses offered on the UN Tourism Online Academy are available free of charge, with the option to obtain a certificate of completion for a nominal fee. This online education initiative, supported by Booking.com, aligns with the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Program led by UN Tourism in collaboration with UNEP – UN Environment Program. By providing accessible and comprehensive training on sustainability practices, these courses aim to drive positive change within the hospitality industry and contribute to a more sustainable future for tourism worldwide.
