Transforming cafes and parks into peaceful literary sanctuaries: Silent Book Club JB

In a world where technology often dominates our attention, three friends in Johor Baru have launched a unique public reading initiative called Silent Book Club JB. This initiative, founded by Yee Xiang Yun, Rhema Seng, and Lee Wern Yiing, aims to create a space where book lovers can come together to enjoy the simple pleasure of reading in a communal setting.

The club, operating under the slogan „Baca Jap“ (Read for a While), encourages participants to read silently for an hour without any communication. This concept blends the intimacy of personal reading with the joy of shared literary experiences, allowing individuals to immerse themselves in their books while also being part of a larger reading community.

Yee Xiang Yun, one of the founders, emphasized the value of taking time out of our busy schedules to read. She mentioned that even a short period of reading can be incredibly valuable, especially for those who are constantly on the go or looking for companionship while reading. The club does not charge any fees for participation, making it accessible to all book lovers in the community.

One of the unique aspects of Silent Book Club JB is its choice of venues. Participants have the option to gather at local cafes or recreational parks for their reading activities. This not only provides a change of scenery but also supports local businesses in the area. Whether someone prefers the peaceful ambiance of a park or the cozy atmosphere of a cafe, they can find a suitable space to indulge in their love for books.

Since its inception, Silent Book Club JB has attracted a diverse group of book lovers, ranging from young children to older adults. The positive feedback received so far indicates that the club is fulfilling its purpose of promoting reading and providing a space for individuals to disconnect from their screens and engage with literature.

The inspiration for Silent Book Club JB came from the original Silent Book Club founded in the United States in 2012. With over 1,000 clubs in 50 countries, the founders saw an opportunity to bring this concept to Johor Baru and promote a culture of reading in their community. Currently, there are only two recognized branches in Malaysia, located in Kota Kinabalu and Johor Baru.

As the club continues to grow, Yee Xiang Yun invites the public to join a special reading activity in conjunction with the National Day celebration. The event will take place at the Adda Heights recreational park in Johor Baru, where participants are encouraged to bring books by local authors or those related to history to commemorate the occasion.

In conclusion, Silent Book Club JB is more than just a reading initiative – it is a movement that aims to foster a love for reading and create a sense of community among book enthusiasts. By providing a space for individuals to come together and enjoy the simple pleasure of reading, the club hopes to play a significant role in promoting literacy and cultural appreciation in Johor Baru.
