The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is gearing up for its fourth edition of the conference on energy poverty, scheduled to take place on 26 June in Brussels. This event follows the success of the EESC’s previous conferences in 2021, 2022, and 2023, which focused on various aspects of energy poverty in relation to the European Pillar of Social Rights and the European Green Deal.
The upcoming conference aims to build on the recommendations made in previous years and further collaborate with stakeholders and partners to address areas where Member States may have fallen short in implementing these suggestions. The theme for the 2024 conference is energy affordability, with a specific focus on ensuring a stable and affordable energy supply for a just green transition, without neglecting vulnerable citizens, households, and small to medium-sized enterprises.
One of the key topics to be discussed at the conference is the European Commission’s recent Recommendation on energy poverty to Member States, issued on 20 October 2023. This recommendation will be examined in detail, along with the opportunities, action points, and challenges it presents for addressing energy poverty in Europe.
Another important aspect of the conference will be the evaluation of National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) and their effectiveness in helping Europe meet its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources, all while keeping energy prices affordable for consumers.
Furthermore, the conference will delve into the specific challenges faced by groups that are particularly vulnerable to energy poverty, such as those with disabilities, elderly individuals, and marginalized communities. Best practices for supporting these groups and ensuring access to affordable housing and energy-efficient renovations will be explored during the event.
Additionally, the Energy Poverty Advisory Hub (EPAH) and the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) will have a dedicated session to report on their efforts and engage in discussions on combating energy poverty in Europe.
Overall, the EESC’s conference on energy poverty promises to be a comprehensive and insightful event, bringing together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to address the pressing issue of energy affordability and ensure a just transition to a greener future for all European citizens.
