Travel & Tourism Officials Optimistic for Consistent Weather and Return of American Tourists

Travel and tourism have long been essential components of Vermont’s economy, attracting visitors from near and far to experience the state’s natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. However, recent years have brought significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and devastating floods in 2023 and 2024. These events have had a profound impact on the hospitality industry, ski resorts, and outdoor recreation businesses across the state.

Despite these challenges, Vermont’s tourism sector has shown resilience and adaptability. The state’s diverse outdoor recreation sector has been a significant contributor to the economy, generating close to $3 billion in travel and tourism spending in 2023. This sector has also seen substantial growth in its workforce, reaching 15,000 workers in 2022, marking the highest percentage growth in the nation.

The ski industry, a key player in Vermont’s tourism sector, has faced weather disruptions in recent years, impacting early season conditions. However, ski resorts have made significant investments in snowmaking technology, allowing them to provide favorable skiing conditions even in challenging weather. The upcoming ski season is anticipated to be strong, with early-season ticket sales on par with previous years.

In addition to the ski industry, other outdoor recreation activities such as mountain biking have also seen positive developments. The opening of the first fully adaptable mountain biking trails in Bolton has provided opportunities for adaptive athletes and outdoor enthusiasts of all levels to enjoy the state’s natural landscapes.

Tourism officials and promoters have been closely monitoring trends in visitor spending and bookings, with early indicators suggesting a positive outlook for the upcoming fall foliage season and ski season. While some areas experienced a soft summer, overall visitor spending has remained steady, and bookings for the fall season are up compared to the previous year.

Despite the positive trends, businesses in the hospitality industry continue to face challenges such as rising food prices, labor shortages, and inflation. Restaurants play a crucial role in Vermont’s tourism industry, supporting the state’s farm economy and contributing to the overall visitor experience. Efforts to support businesses, such as freezing or reducing rates and offering value-added events, are essential to ensure the industry’s continued success.

The recent opening of the Driving Range trail in Bolton, the state’s first fully accessible trail network, highlights Vermont’s commitment to promoting outdoor recreation and tourism. The trail provides opportunities for adaptive athletes and outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the state’s natural beauty and diverse landscapes.

Overall, Vermont’s tourism industry has shown resilience in the face of challenges, with a strong focus on sustainability, accessibility, and economic growth. By continuing to invest in infrastructure, support businesses, and promote outdoor recreation opportunities, Vermont is well-positioned to attract visitors and maintain its status as a top destination for travelers seeking outdoor adventures and natural beauty.
