The recent wave of violence in Santa Catarina, Brazil, has left the community shaken and authorities on high alert. In a series of coordinated attacks, six vehicles, including a bus, were set on fire by criminals. The police were able to seize six firearms, ammunition, and bulletproof vests during their investigation into the incidents.
According to the Santa Catarina Fire Department, the perpetrators also erected 17 barricades, with some of them being set ablaze. The majority of these barricades, 12 in total, were located in Florianópolis, while the remaining five were spread across neighboring cities such as São José, Palhoça, and Tijucas.
The situation in Tijucas escalated when three cars were set on fire along the BR-101 highway, causing a 21-kilometer traffic jam towards Porto Alegre. Fortunately, the highway administration managed to clear all lanes by 5:30 pm, restoring normal traffic flow.
Two individuals were injured and subsequently arrested by the police. These suspects were allegedly involved in acts of vandalism in the Mocotó and Chico Mendes communities in Florianópolis. The Chief of the Santa Catarina Civil Police reported that the suspects resisted arrest, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement. Both individuals were taken into custody after receiving medical treatment.
In response to the escalating violence, heightened security measures were implemented during Paul McCartney’s concert in Florianópolis. The Police Chief stated that additional personnel were deployed to ensure the safety of attendees at the event held at Ressacada stadium in the southern part of the city. The increased police presence was aimed at preventing any potential disturbances during the concert.
Governor Jorginho Mello addressed the public during a press conference, reassuring citizens that the situation was under control. He condemned the attacks as the work of „bandits and troublemakers associated with criminal factions.“ Despite the unsettling events, he commended the police for their swift response and emphasized that law enforcement acted in accordance with protocol.
