Two Croatian children’s books selected for top literature catalogue

Two Croatian picture books, „Darklets“ by Igor Rajki and Klasja Habjan, and „Papa in Pyjamas“ by Svjetlan Junaković, have recently been included in the prestigious White Ravens catalogue of the best children’s books. This catalogue, published by the International Youth Library in Munich, showcases over 200 notable new publications from 62 countries in 44 languages. The books selected for inclusion are chosen by children’s literature experts for their literary and artistic quality, as well as the themes they explore.

„Darklets“ tells the story of darkness descending in a room at the end of the day, with sprouts of darkness, known as darklets, being disturbed by screens of various sizes. The book won an award for the best picture book of 2023 and was also recognized by the Zagreb National and University Library for its beautiful design. On the other hand, „Papa in Pyjamas“ explores the power of love in tough times, focusing on a father who stays home from work one day and a homework assignment that changes the mood of the entire family.

These two books will be featured at the Frankfurt Book Fair and on Instagram at @thewhiteravens.books, under the hashtag #ravenoftheday. Additionally, all the books from this year’s White Ravens catalogue will be displayed at the International Youth Library stand at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair next year.

The inclusion of „Darklets“ and „Papa in Pyjamas“ in the White Ravens catalogue is a significant achievement for Croatian children’s literature, showcasing the talent and creativity of Croatian authors and illustrators. These books not only entertain and engage young readers but also offer valuable lessons and insights that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Overall, the recognition of these two picture books in the White Ravens catalogue highlights the diversity and quality of children’s literature being produced in Croatia. It is a testament to the creativity and storytelling prowess of Croatian authors and illustrators, ensuring that their work reaches a global audience and continues to inspire and delight children everywhere.
