The Unity Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been actively working towards the welfare and development of the Indian community in Malaysia. In a recent statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that various programmes have been initiated to assist in the progress of the Indian community, in line with the concept of the Malaysia MADANI government.
One of the key areas of focus for the government has been the eradication of hardcore poverty. Prime Minister Anwar highlighted the success of poverty eradication efforts in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Penang. He emphasized that these initiatives were carried out regardless of race, with a specific focus on assisting those who are less privileged within the Indian community.
In terms of education, the government has taken significant steps to support the Indian community. This includes the establishment of four new Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) schools in Selangor and Perak, as well as two additional schools in Negeri Sembilan. Additionally, funds have been allocated for the development of SJK (T) schools and Tamil literature, demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for the Indian community.
Prime Minister Anwar also addressed the issue of employment opportunities for the Indian community. The government has engaged in discussions with private entities to provide training and increase the number of Indians employed in government-linked companies. Efforts have also been made to empower Indian women entrepreneurs through the Prosperity Empowerment and A New Normal for Indian Women (PENN) programme.
Furthermore, the government has expanded the functions of Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM) to benefit the Indian community. A significant amount of funding has been allocated to empower Indian women entrepreneurs through microcredit initiatives. Additionally, the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) has been placed under the Prime Minister’s Department to further support the upliftment of the Indian community.
In his address, Prime Minister Anwar urged the Indian community to not view everything through the lens of race. He emphasized that the government is committed to addressing the issues raised by the Indian community and working towards a more inclusive society for all citizens. The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of setting a positive example for other communities in Malaysia and striving for justice and equality for all citizens.
The Fifth International Convention and Celebration of Indian statesman Dr. Ambedkar’s 133rd birthday and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, attended by about 1,500 participants and 250 foreign delegates, serves as a platform for dialogue and collaboration among various stakeholders. It is a testament to the government’s commitment to fostering unity and progress within the Indian community and Malaysia as a whole.
