The Center for Career and Technical Education (CCTE) at The University of New Mexico-Gallup is undergoing a transformation with a new director, Karla Baldonado, and a dedicated long-time coordinator, Bobbi Campos, at the helm. Together, they are working tirelessly to ensure student success through hands-on, career-focused education programs in collaboration with area high schools.
The CCTE is a joint effort between UNM-Gallup and several local schools to offer a variety of career and technical education courses to students in the community. These programs of study are designed to prepare students for high-demand, high-skill jobs in fields such as automotive technology, construction, cosmetology, criminal justice, culinary arts, design and digital media, fire science, health careers, and more.
One of the unique aspects of the CCTE programs is the emphasis on on-the-job training. Students in the MVSO and SAND programs have the opportunity to work with local businesses to gain real-world experience. This hands-on training often leads to job offers for students upon completion of the program, providing them with a direct pathway to employment.
In addition to technical skills, students in the CCTE program also learn valuable soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. This holistic approach to education ensures that students are well-rounded and prepared for success in their chosen careers.
The CCTE program is also cost-effective for students, as their home high schools cover fees and textbooks, and transportation is provided to and from the college campus. With small class sizes and the opportunity to earn up to 18 credits, students in the CCTE program receive a head start on their academic and career goals.
Bobbi Campos, the CCTE program coordinator, has been a driving force behind the program for 26 years. Her passion for helping students succeed is evident in her dedication to the program and the individual growth she witnesses in each student throughout the year. Working closely with school counselors, Campos ensures that students have the support they need to thrive in the CCTE program.
Karla Baldonado, the new CCTE director, brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to student success. Her return to UNM-Gallup after managing the Center for Academic Learning demonstrates her passion for working with students and supporting their college goals.
The CCTE program also offers students the opportunity to participate in SkillsUSA, a competitive platform where students can showcase their work-related skills. This allows students to express their creativity and talent in various fields, from cosmetology to welding, and gain recognition at the state and national levels.
Overall, the Center for Career and Technical Education at UNM-Gallup is dedicated to supporting student success and providing students with the skills they need to thrive in their chosen careers. With a new director and a committed coordinator leading the way, the future looks bright for students in the CCTE program.
