The Tennessee Highway Patrol has identified the driver involved in a tragic incident at Lake Ocoee as 46-year-old Michele L. Lorino. The incident occurred when Lorino’s 2019 Toyota Camry, traveling eastbound, veered off the right side of US-64, hitting a rock wall and guardrail, causing the vehicle to become airborne and land in Parksville Lake. The vehicle was recovered on Saturday, along with Lorino’s body.
Authorities in Polk County responded to a tip on Friday afternoon, reporting that a car had crashed into a guardrail and plunged into Lake Ocoee. Despite hours of investigation, the vehicle remained elusive, leaving officials with many unanswered questions. The search and rescue efforts were set to resume at 8:00 am on Saturday.
The challenging terrain of Lake Ocoee presents difficulties for search and rescue operations. The lake reaches depths of up to 102 feet, making it hazardous for divers to navigate. Divers can only spend a limited amount of time at such depths before needing to decompress to avoid nitrogen sickness. Additionally, factors such as oxygen levels, daylight, and the safety of wildlife in the area must be considered during the operation.
Search and rescue teams were fully engaged in the efforts to locate the vehicle and its occupants. With ten divers in the water, six boats deployed, and the use of ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), the operation required significant manpower. The teams planned to continue their efforts on Saturday, with additional boats and dive teams on standby.
Authorities urged the public to stay away from the scene to avoid interfering with the investigation. Heavy traffic on both water and land could pose risks to rescuers and impede the search efforts. By keeping the area clear, the rescue teams could focus on their mission without distractions or obstacles.
In conclusion, the incident at Lake Ocoee has prompted a coordinated and intensive search and rescue operation. Despite the challenges posed by the lake’s depth and terrain, authorities remain committed to locating the vehicle and providing closure for the family of the victim. The community’s cooperation and support are essential in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the ongoing rescue efforts.
