Over the weekend, a series of mudslides wreaked havoc on Highway 82 near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, causing chaos and destruction in their wake. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has been working tirelessly to clean up the mess left behind and ensure the safety of all travelers in the area.
The mudslides occurred on Saturday night into early Sunday morning, covering a nearly mile-long stretch of road with feet of mud and debris. Several vehicles were swept up in the slides, leaving one stranded on the highway. Thankfully, law enforcement was able to evacuate all drivers and passengers from the vehicles, and there were no reported injuries.
CDOT immediately sprang into action, deploying three front-loaders, a backhoe, and nine trucks to clear the roadway. Despite the challenging conditions, crews worked around the clock to remove the mud and debris, with the goal of reopening the eastbound lanes of the highway by 5 a.m. on Monday for travelers heading from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. Those heading west were advised to use the CR 154 bypass until the road could be fully cleared, which CDOT hoped to accomplish by noon.
In light of the recent soggy weather that Colorado has been experiencing, CDOT offered some valuable advice for drivers navigating the state’s roadways. They emphasized the importance of staying informed about weather conditions and forecasts, as heavy rainstorms can lead to flooding, mudslides, and falling rocks. Drivers were urged to never attempt to drive through flooded areas, as the depth and speed of the water can be unpredictable.
Even a few inches of water or mud can pose a significant risk to vehicles, potentially causing them to float or be swept off the road. In the event of mudslides or flooding, drivers were advised to wait for the water to recede or for crews to clear the road before proceeding. It’s crucial to remember that flooding can conceal hidden debris and hazards beneath the surface, making it essential to exercise caution and patience when navigating affected areas.
As cleanup efforts continue on Highway 82 near Glenwood Springs, CDOT remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all travelers in the region. By following their advice and staying informed about weather conditions, drivers can help mitigate the risks associated with inclement weather and ensure a safe journey on Colorado’s roadways.
