As the new school year approaches, many families are faced with the financial burden of purchasing school supplies and clothes for their children. In Elgin, Illinois, the Salvation Army Elgin Corps organized a back-to-school shopping event to help alleviate some of this burden for 25 children in need. The event was a unique opportunity for these children to shop for clothes with the help of volunteers, ensuring they have everything they need to start the school year off right.
One of the children who participated in the event was 7-year-old Abril Godinez. Abril had a clear idea of what she wanted – purple clothes. With a big smile on her face, she was paired with Blanca Garcia from Centro de Información in Elgin, who helped her pick out the perfect purple outfits. This personal touch made the shopping experience special for Abril and the other children who participated.
Rick Reigner, the resource development director for the Elgin Corps, explained that the organization wanted to do something different with this event. While many groups in the community provide backpacks filled with school supplies, the Elgin Corps wanted to focus on providing clothes for children in need. This personalized approach allowed them to work closely with each child and make a direct impact on their back-to-school experience.
Each child was paired with a volunteer and given $150 to spend on clothes for the upcoming school year. This financial assistance is crucial for families who may be struggling to make ends meet. Reigner emphasized the importance of identifying families in need and providing them with the support they need to ensure their children are prepared for school.
The volunteers, such as Paola Gallegos and Roberto Viquez, played a crucial role in helping the children pick out clothes that they liked and that fit them well. For children like Lusero Ibarra and her brother Emiliano, having the opportunity to shop for new clothes was a special treat. The Salvation Army Elgin Corps made sure that each child had a positive and memorable shopping experience.
Events like the back-to-school shopping trip organized by the Salvation Army Elgin Corps are a reminder of the importance of community support and generosity. By coming together to help those in need, we can make a real difference in the lives of children and families who are facing financial hardship. As the children head back to school with new clothes and supplies, they can do so with confidence and excitement for the year ahead.
