„We wanted to create our own version“: Yakuza TV show cast on not playing the games

Excitement is building for the upcoming release of the TV show Like a Dragon: Yakuza, Amazon’s latest video game adaptation. Following in the footsteps of their hit series Fallout, this new show is based on the popular crime video game series of the same name. Fans are eagerly anticipating the premiere of this Prime Video series, which promises to deliver action-packed entertainment.

The show will feature actor Ryoma Takeuchi in the lead role of Kiryu, a fearless Yakuza warrior. Spanning two timelines, viewers will witness how Kiryu’s actions impact not only the criminal underworld but also his relationship with childhood friend Akira Nishikiyama, portrayed by Kento Kaku. The dynamic between the two characters is sure to add depth and complexity to the storyline, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.

During an interview with GamesRadar+ at SDCC, Takeuchi and Kaku revealed that they had never played the Yakuza games prior to filming. In fact, the team behind the show specifically asked them to avoid playing the games in order to approach their characters with fresh perspectives. This decision was made to allow the actors to explore their roles from scratch and bring their own interpretations to the characters.

Despite their lack of prior gaming experience, Takeuchi and Kaku were determined to honor the legacy of the Yakuza franchise while also putting their own stamp on the show. Kaku emphasized the importance of respecting the source material while also infusing the characters with their own unique personalities. By striking a balance between homage and originality, the actors aimed to create a compelling and authentic portrayal of the beloved characters.

The first three episodes of Like a Dragon: Yakuza are set to premiere on Prime Video on October 24, with new episodes releasing weekly. Fans can look forward to immersing themselves in the thrilling world of the Yakuza, brought to life by a talented cast and creative team. As the show unfolds, viewers can expect twists, turns, and plenty of action to keep them hooked from start to finish.

In conclusion, Like a Dragon: Yakuza promises to be a must-watch series for fans of the video game franchise and newcomers alike. With a talented cast, intriguing storyline, and a fresh take on familiar characters, this show is sure to captivate audiences and leave them eagerly anticipating each new episode. Be sure to mark your calendars for the premiere date and get ready to dive into the world of the Yakuza like never before.
