West Michigan Business News: August 2024

The local business scene in Grand Rapids and surrounding areas has seen a flurry of activity recently, with several new openings, relocations, and concept changes. Here’s a round-up of some of the biggest changes that have taken place in the past few months.

One of the most anticipated openings was The Sovengard’s return after a two-year hiatus. The Scandinavian-inspired eatery reopened its doors at 1232 Bridge St., Grand Rapids, with a focus on hyper-local, seasonal, and responsibly sourced food and drink. The new location boasts a beautiful biergarten, continuing the tradition of the previous spot and welcoming back loyal customers.

Gin Gin’s, a new concept from the team behind Butcher’s Union, also made its debut in the West Michigan dining scene. Located at 345 Summer Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, this restaurant offers a diverse menu of American classics, including premium steaks, fresh seafood, and handmade pasta. The focus on handcrafted martinis and vintage cocktails has already drawn in crowds, with dinner reservations filling up quickly.

Lotus Brew Coffee/Dry Bar relocated to East Hills at 211 Diamond Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, after outgrowing its former location in Creston. This queer café has become a community hub, offering non-alcoholic cocktails, a library, and of course, delicious coffee and espresso drinks. The welcoming atmosphere and sense of community have made it a favorite spot for many in the area.

Taquero Mucho, a colorful new addition to the Godwin Heights neighborhood in Wyoming, has quickly gained popularity for its vibrant aesthetic and menu of tacos, burritos, quesabirria, tamales, and more. The bright pink decor makes it a perfect spot for Instagram-worthy photos, while the delicious food keeps customers coming back for more.

House Rules Board Game Lounge recently opened its brand-new kitchen, offering a menu of sliders, „nom noms,“ and loaded fries to accompany their extensive selection of craft beer, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages. The lounge, located at 404 Ionia Ave. SW, Grand Rapids, provides a fun and interactive dining experience for guests looking to enjoy a meal while playing their favorite board games.

Mercadito Mexican Eats and Treats, the second restaurant from the owner of El Granjero, opened its doors at 1202 W. Fulton St., near the John Ball Zoo. This new spot serves up creative and flavorful Mexican street food, including savory dishes like pambazo and flautas, as well as sweet treats like mini pancakes and marquesitas. The vibrant and lively atmosphere makes it a must-visit for fans of Mexican cuisine.

The Nightwatch Lounge, located in downtown Grand Rapids at 201 W. Fulton St., offers a sophisticated and curated cocktail experience in a hidden, Prohibition-era-inspired space. With a focus on high-quality drinks and a stylish ambiance, this cocktail lounge has quickly become a favorite among those looking for a more upscale drinking experience.

In Allendale, The Borough has established itself as a go-to spot for coffee and American-style dishes, including bagels, soup, salads, sandwiches, and acai bowls. The café, which started as a coffee cart in a garage, has now found a permanent home at 10237 42nd Ave., offering innovative and delicious food and drink options for customers in the area.

Broad Leaf Westside has returned with a new concept at 443 Bridge St. NW, Grand Rapids, featuring extreme milkshakes from Shake Party and an incubator kitchen that hosts different cooks serving up a variety of cuisines. The brewery/eatery still offers its signature arcade games and outdoor patio, making it a fun and dynamic dining destination for locals and visitors alike.

Muskegon Brewing Company has become the latest addition to the local brewery scene, offering a variety of craft beer styles and a tasty food menu on Muskegon Lake. With a beautiful view of the water from its second-floor patio, this new spot has quickly become a popular destination for beer enthusiasts and foodies alike.

Overall, the recent openings, closings, and changes in the local business scene have brought a fresh energy and excitement to the Grand Rapids area. Whether you’re looking for a cozy café, a trendy cocktail lounge, or a vibrant Mexican eatery, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the diverse and dynamic dining landscape of West Michigan.
