What is the cost of „green plates“ for electric vehicle owners in Tajikistan?

The future of electric vehicles in Tajikistan is set to include a new requirement for „green plates,“ as reported by Asia-Plus. This regulation, set to take effect on April 2, 2024, will see all electric vehicles in the country equipped with these distinctive plates during state registration. While currently only passenger electric vehicles are receiving green plates, the plan is to eventually extend this requirement to all types of electric transport.

The decision to introduce green plates for electric vehicles stems from the National Program for the Development of Electric Transport in Tajikistan and the Concept for Transition to an Electric Passenger Transport System in the Capital. These initiatives aim to promote sustainability and reduce emissions in the transportation sector.

According to Mr. Nusratullo Mahmoudzada, a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, the issuance of green plates is currently mandatory for passenger electric vehicles. Private electric vehicle owners can also obtain these plates, but it remains unclear if this will be a requirement in the future. Official prices for green plates have not yet been announced, with further details expected to be provided at an upcoming news press conference.

Taxi drivers in Tajikistan have reported varying prices for green plates, ranging from 2500 to 3000 somonis. Some drivers have noted that these plates have only been issued to drivers of specific companies, such as the Eco Taxi 9090 Company, which is leading the shift towards electric vehicles in the transportation sector. The company currently operates 400 electric cars and plans to expand its fleet to 2000 vehicles.

In line with efforts to promote electric transport, the Dushanbe mayor has decreed that all taxi companies operating in the city must transition entirely to electric vehicles by September 1, 2025. As of June 1, 2024, over 4350 taxi cabs were operating in Dushanbe, with 2450 of them being electric cars. This shift towards electric vehicles is part of a larger plan to allocate approximately 230 million somonis over the next five years for the development of electric transport in Tajikistan.

Funding for this initiative will come from various sources, including the national budget, development partners, and the private sector. With a focus on sustainability and reducing emissions, the introduction of green plates for electric vehicles marks a significant step towards a more environmentally friendly transportation system in Tajikistan.
