What is the new neutral replacing gray?

Gray has been a staple in interior design for decades, but in recent years, there has been a shift towards warmer neutrals, specifically beige. Designers and color experts are embracing beige as the new go-to color for creating softer, more welcoming spaces filled with character and warmth. Beige pairs well with natural materials like wood and stone, which are currently on-trend in interior design.

Deborah Bass, founder of Base Interior, explains that a neutral scheme provides a great foundation for adding accents of color. Beige, along with its darker variations, is also replacing white as a popular choice in interior design. The versatility of beige allows for a variety of design options, from creating a soothing home office to a cozy living room.

As we move away from cool-toned grays, colors like beige, amber, ivory, rust, and sepia tones are taking over. Gray is often associated with dullness and boredom, leading to a desire for warmer, more comforting colors in our homes. Anthony Barzilay Freund, editorial director of 1stDibs, notes that comforting colors that evoke nature and warmth are becoming more popular in interior design.

While beige is gaining popularity, there are still shades of gray that can look fresh and contemporary. Charu Gandhi, founder of Elicyon, suggests using deeper, darker grays or near-blacks to create a cozy atmosphere in a room. Pairing gray with pops of color and texture can prevent the space from feeling somber.

When it comes to decorating with beige, designers recommend mixing and matching patterns, textures, and occasional pops of color to create a layered and interesting space. Beige can be used in various rooms, from kitchens to bedrooms, bathrooms, and entryways, to create a timeless and elegant look.

In conclusion, both gray and beige have their place in interior design, depending on the overall feel you want to create in your rooms. Beige is currently trending as a warmer, more inviting alternative to cool gray tones. Whether you choose gray or beige, the key is to create a space that reflects your personal style and makes you feel comfortable and at home.
